The truth behind the Church’s teaching on matters of life—whether in matters of economics, politics, bioethics, healthcare and so on—is quite simple. The Church has always taught that life is sacred. As Christians we believe God created each one of us and that each person is loved by God and meant to live forever in communion with him. Thus, each human person possesses a sacredness that nothing can erase.
In the Gospel of Life we learned how the Church proclaims again the truth of life’s sanctity. Wherever life is found—be it in the womb, or in the hospital bed, or anywhere in between—it is holy and cannot be eliminated or exploited for the sake of any other perceived good. Innocent life can never be taken, no matter how good the reasons may appear for doing so.
The Church’s teaching is comprehensive and sophisticated. As Catholics we should be alert to the warning sounded by the Church in the great moral struggle of our era. We shouldn’t be apathetic. We should be pro-life—unconditionally.
